In order to minimize the frequency of desert locust plagues and their associated food losses, locust-affected countries and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations (UN) have adopted a preventive control strategy that relies on early warning and early reaction. FAO operates an early warning system, the Desert Locust Information Service (DLIS), which monitors weather, ecological conditions, and locust infestations in the potentially affected area on a daily basis.
